SAME DAY. NIGHT.
KATIE’S APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM
Katie is sitting on the couch. She is drinking a glass of red wine and watching television. The color from the television is lighting up a nearly darkroom. The only other thing lighting the room is two lamps.
WOMAN: (on the television) In other news, police are still searching for two shooters at large. One shooter is for the case of Julian Stenbeck. The other is for that of Casey Hughes. These cases have currently sparked a debate through Oakdale. And, the people of this town, are expecting the newly elected Mayor to choose a side and take immediate acting of the situation.
Then, there is a knock at the door. Katie shuts off the television and sets down her wine glass and the remote on the table in front of her. She then stands and goes to the door.
KATIE: (opening the door) Margo. Well, this is a surprise. Come in.
Margo enters the apartment. Katie shuts the door and goes to her.
KATIE: They were just discussing Casey on the news. How is he?
MARGO: He’s currently in an induced coma. Susan says he being a sleep will speed up the healing process. But, it is always a risky ballgame if he’ll come out of it on his own or not.
KATIE: I am so sorry.
MARGO: Are you? See, Casey needs Tom and I right now. He needs the both of us. But, instead, I just got a call from the police. Tom is being arrested right now. And, before I go to the station to help my poor husband, I just need to know, what the hell is wrong with you?
KATIE: Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. I am sorry that Tom is being arrested. But, I didn’t do this. I have yet to speak to the police about what I saw.
MARGO: What you think you saw! Come on, we both know you didn’t see Tom that night. Just come forward with the truth.
KATIE: The truth! The truth is that I did see him!
MARGO: Katie, if you love me, you will come forth in support of Tom.
KATIE: I’m sorry, but if the police ask me what I saw that night, I’ll tell them the truth, Margo. That is exactly what I will do. I will not perjure myself.
MARGO: Well, if you come forward to the police, perhaps I should too.
KATIE: What does that mean?
MARGO: It means that I know your history with Julian like the back of my hand. And, I think once the police hear what he has done to you, they’ll find that you had enough motive yourself. Who knows, you could be in a holding cell right next to Tom by the end of the day.
KATIE: You wouldn’t do that.
MARGO: Try me. I dare you to test that theory.
LAKEVIEW - ROSANNA’S SUITE
Rosanna is dressed in a pair of silk pajamas and a silk robe. She is brushing her hair when a knock is heard at the door. She puts her hairbrush down and goes to the door.
ROSANNA: (opening the door) Dusty, what are you doing here?
DUSTY: I’m ready. I’m ready to tell you the truth. All of it.
Rosanna smiles at Dusty. The camera zooms in on her.
BRO - BARBARA’S OFFICE
Barbara is over by a table in her office. She is pouring two glasses of scotch on the rocks. She takes the two glasses and walks over to Paul, handing him one.
PAUL: What's this for?
BARBARA: I just think that after you hear what transpired the night of Julian’s shooting, you’ll need a good drink to wash the story down.
PAUL: Oh crap. Did you shoot him?!
BARBARA: No, I didn’t. I wish you would stop asking me that question! Just listen. Please, just listen to what I have to say. Then, you can decide if you believe me or not.
PAUL: Okay. Well, go ahead. Tell me. What happened that night?
BARBARA: It all started when I thought about all Julian had done to me and my family. Then, I opened up a small box that sits on the desk in my living room, I pulled out a gun, and I got ready to go over to his home.
VANESSA’S CAR
Vanessa is sitting in the driver's seat of her car. She is driving to where Tom is. She then clicks a button on her steering wheel.
VANESSA: Call Jack.
WOMAN: (voice over) Calling Jack.
There is a ringing noise heard throughout the car.
WOMAN: (voice over) This number is currently not accepting calls at the moment. Please leave a message for 1-847-555-7255.
VANESSA: Hey, Jack, it’s Vanessa. Danielle and I found some interesting evidence. There was a bloody cloth in the dumpster behind Julian’s place. The cloth contained his blood and Tom Hughes’ finger prints. I got a warrant and I’m on my way to see Tom now. I’m arresting him for Julian’s murder. I’d love for you to meet me at the station. Hope to see you soon. Bye.
Vanessa presses the HANG UP button on her steering wheel and the call ends. The camera zooms in on her determined face.
VANESSA: I’m gonna close this case. And, I’m gonna get justice for my brother. Tom Hughes is not going to get away with what he did. I’ll make sure of that.
FAIRWINDS - LIVING ROOM
Emily wipes her tears away with a tissue.
TOM: Have you...um...have you heard anything about them shipping the body back here to Oakdale for a funeral?
EMILY: You know, it’s crazy, our son had a will.
TOM: He did? But…, he was so young.
EMILY: I know. I know. But, he did. Anyway, his last will and testament stated that he wanted to be cremated. I’ve already ordered that his ashes be shipped here...to me.
TOM: Okay. That’s good. Come here.
Tom hugs Emily.
TOM: I’ll organize the ceremony. You just take a breather. I got this. Okay?
EMILY: Okay. (coming off the huge) I just...I feel so guilty.
TOM: Why?
EMILY: After he graduated from Harvard business school, and moved away to form his own company, I didn’t make the effort. I should’ve made more of an effort to see my son. I am so stupid! I know that life is too precious and short.
TOM: Emily, this was a freak accident. Do not blame yourself. His death wasn’t your fault. Our little boy is not gone because of you.
EMILY: You really mean that?
TOM: Of course I do. He always knew that we were right beside him. And, now, he is right beside us. He is in our hearts...our mind...our souls.
EMILY: Can I have another hug?
TOM: Oh god, of course.
Tom hugs Emily again.
TOM: Everything's gonna be okay. I promise. I promise.
Back at the LakeView, in Rosanna’s Suite, Dusty enters. Rosanna shuts the door and goes to him. The two sit on the couch in the suite.
ROSANNA: I’m so glad you finally decided to come clean to me.
DUSTY: I want you back home so badly. I want you in my life. I want to be married to you. And, telling the truth is the way to do that.
ROSANNA: Yes, it most certainly is.
DUSTY: (sighs) Here it goes. Right away, I need to be upfront with you. I had every intention of shooting Julian. In fact, I had a gun loaded with three bullets. I was prepared to kill him or seriously injure him. He killed Janet. He killed the only stable motherly figure my son had ever known. And, after Craig decided he wanted Johnny back, and after Craig lost the custody battle, Johnny needed another parent more than ever. But, Janet wasn’t there of course. And, that hurt me more than anything. All this hurt and rage had been building up for months. This was a permanent solution. I got off of the elevator at Julian’s home...and I went inside...but Julian was already shot. Someone else beat me to it.
ROSANNA: Oh my god. Do you know who?
DUSTY: I have a pretty good idea. But, I don’t know if this person did it.
ROSANNA: What do you mean?
DUSTY: I was about to leave when something caught my attention.
ROSANNA: What caught your attention.
DUSTY: Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something on the ground. I saw an earring. I walked over and I picked up the earring. I could tell right away that it belonged to someone very, very close to me.
ROSANNA: Who?
DUSTY: Margo.
ROSANNA: Margo?!
DUSTY: Yes. I took the earring to protect her.
ROSANNA: Do you still have it?
DUSTY: No. I came home, started a fire, and through the earring in there. It melted away. It was one of those cheap pairs from the mall.
ROSANNA: So, you tampered with evidence?
DUSTY: Yes. And, I told Johnny all of this. And, because of telling him all of this, I realized I was strong enough to tell you. So, there. Now, you know the truth.
ROSANNA: I do. And, now, I can protect you.
DUSTY: Wait...you’re not going to tell the police what I did?
ROSANNA: No. You came clean to me. And, you didn’t shoot him. That means more to me than anything. And, you protected an upstanding woman of the community. The least I could do is protect the man I love.
DUSTY: Thank you. Thank you. I love you, Rosanna.
ROSANNA: I love you too.
Rosanna and Dusty kiss one another passionately.
Back at Katie’s Apartment, in the Living Room, Margo sets her purse down on the couch. She then throws her hands up in a plea.
MARGO: Katie, I am begging you. Call of the dogs. I don’t care if you told the police or not. But, you have the power to tell the police that you were there and did not see Tom. Tell them you were driving by and saw someone else.
KATIE: Who?! Did you ever think of that?
MARGO: Tell them you don’t know. But, tell them Tom couldn’t have done it because you saw him at the Mona Lisa...or the gym...or somewhere besides the alley.
KATIE: How come you can’t do this?
MARGO: You think the police will really...truly...believe the wife giving her husband an allaby? It’s a classic tale the only leads to trouble. If you do this for me, I will be grateful. But, if you go against Tom and tell the police something different, I will have to retaliate against you.
KATIE: Tell me something, Margo, do you believe Tom didn’t do it?
MARGO: Of course I believe he didn’t do it. I know Tom. We had a huge fight about this. And, I could see it in his eyes. He didn’t shoot Julian. I just want this whole thing to be put to rest.
Then, Margo checks her watch.
MARGO: Look, I better get home and start constructing a plan for Tom to get out from under this whole mess. And, I better take notes for his arraignment tomorrow. I want to make sure he can concoct a good enough story. Just because he’s the DA doesn’t mean he won’t be too stressed out to not think.
Margo collects her things, goes to the door, and opens it.
MARGO: Please, do the right thing, Katie. Please.
Margo exits. The camera cuts back to Katie and zooms in on her. It is very apparent that she is stressed to the maximum. She lets out a deep breath.
Back at BRO, in Barbara’s Office, Barbara takes a sip of her drink. She then walks a couple steps away from Paul and turns around so he can’t see her facial expressions.
PAUL: I’m waiting.
BARBARA: I know. I’m just thinking about how to tell you what I saw that night. I don’t want you to think I did something I did not do.
PAUL: Mom, I really will believe whatever you tell me. I just want you to tell me the truth. Go ahead. Tell your side of the story.
BARBARA: Okay. (turning around) Here it goes. You already know I was carrying a loaded gun that night. But, what you don’t know is that before I went to grab my gun, I had already confronted him earlier that night. I went off on him. I even suggested he quit BRO for your sake. I could see what he was doing to you. And, even though I hired him to keep an eye on him, and take over his perfume formulas, I just couldn’t do that to you. I couldn’t let him hurt you. But, firing him wasn’t going to work. I needed to neutralize the enemy. By the time I got there, I saw someone coming out of Julian’s penthouse with a gun. They were wearing a black hoodie…, so I couldn’t see their face. But, I hung back to see if I could get any clues. I saw the person take off the gloves they were wearing. I saw a pair of hands belonging to a woman. An older woman at that. That’s when I ran away.
PAUL: My god, you really didn’t shoot him. But, you might’ve seen who did.
BARBARA: I’m not finished. I saw more.
PAUL: What else did you see?
BARBARA: Out in the parking lot, I saw the same person. I saw them from behind. And, when this person took down their hood, I saw their hair color.
PAUL: Mom, that’s huge! What color hair did they have?
BARBARA: Their hair was a reddish-color.
PAUL: Oh my god. That means the shooter…
BARBARA: Was possibly Margo Hughes.
PAUL: Or…
BARBARA: Or? Is there another suspect?
PAUL: Damn right there is. Lucinda is now a possibility.
BARBARA: Wait. We don’t know anything for sure.
PAUL: Why do you say that?
BARBARA: Because, that shooter could’ve been wearing a wig.
PAUL: You’re right. They could’ve.
BARBARA: One step forward…
PAUL: Two steps back.
Back at FairWinds, in the Living Room, Emily and Tom are sitting on the couch. They are looking through old pictures of Daniel.
EMILY: This one is my favorite. He was so happy when he got his first bike.
TOM: Gosh, I’ll never forget his face when riding that bike.
EMILY: Same here. I miss moments like this.
TOM: I do too.
Then, there is a knock at the door. Tom is about to stand, Emily stops him.
EMILY: Don’t worry. The maid will get it.
A couple of seconds later, Vanessa enters the room.
TOM: Special Agent Vanessa Russell.
Tom and Emily stand.
EMILY: Can we help you?
VANESSA: It looks like I interrupted a private moment. But, I need to speak with Mr. Hughes. His wife told me he was here.
TOM: Wow. This sounds urgent. What’s up?
VANESSA: We might want to do this outside.
TOM: It’s okay. Whatever you need to tell me, you can say in front of Emily.
VANESSA: Okay. If you insist.
Vanessa pulls out a pair of handcuffs and cuffs Tom.
EMILY: Whoa! What’s going on?
VANESSA: Tom Hughes, you are under arrest for the murder of Julian Stenbeck. You have the right to remain silent. If you give up that right, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney…
The camera begins to cut to everyone. Vanessa is determined. Emily is in absolute disbelief and shocked. And, Tom is very puzzled. The camera zooms in on him.
